How Nigerian Universities Calculate Post-UTME Aggregate Scores
When Nigerian universities conduct admission screening, raw JAMB UTME scores are almost never evaluated alone. Instead, universities compute a composite Aggregate Score (out of 100%) combining your UTME score, Post-UTME screening exam mark, and/or converted O'Level credit grades.
Method 1: The 50:30:20 Formula (e.g. UNILAG, UNIBEN, LASU)
Under this system, the 100% total is partitioned into:
- 50% from UTME: Calculated as (UTME Score ÷ 400) × 50 = (UTME Score ÷ 8)
- 30% from Post-UTME Screening Test: Calculated as (Screening Score ÷ 100) × 30 = (Screening Score × 0.3)
- 20% from 5 Core O'Level Subjects: Each A1 = 4.0 pts, B2 = 3.6 pts, B3 = 3.2 pts, C4 = 2.8 pts, C5 = 2.4 pts, C6 = 2.0 pts (Total = 20 pts max).
Practical Calculation Example:
Suppose a candidate scores 280 in UTME, 70/100 in Post-UTME, and has 5 A1s in O'Level (20 pts):
UTME Component: 280 ÷ 8 = 35.0%
Post-UTME Component: 70 × 0.3 = 21.0%
O'Level Component: 5 × 4.0 = 20.0%
Final Aggregate Score = 35.0 + 21.0 + 20.0 = 76.0%
Method 2: The 50:50 Formula (e.g. University of Ibadan, OAU)
Universities that do not grade O'Level points for composite screening divide the aggregate equally between UTME and Post-UTME:
- UTME (50%): (UTME Score ÷ 8)
- Post-UTME (50%): (Screening Score ÷ 2) or (Raw Score if tested over 50)
Method 3: Pure O'Level Screening (No Exam Universities)
For institutions that conduct non-exam Post-UTME screening (point-system screening), your 5 relevant O'Level grades plus your UTME score are converted directly into points without an in-person or online screening test.
